The Murano Regatta is a strenuous one, only for skilled boatmen. It tests the ability of competitors to single-handedly steer their vessels at high speed through the canals of Murano, the Venetian island famous for its glass work.
The race takes place in the waters of the lagoon between Venice and Murano, as well as within the complex canal system of the island, making for some riveting nautical manoeuvring. The Murano Regatta allows women and the very young to use pupparini, which are lighter than the cumbersome one-oar gondolas reserved for the men.
